Of course the bike misbehaved. He probably didn't remove the idle adjustment screw cover and play with the settings.
The idle screw on the bottom of the carb will only do so much. You have to use the secondary (idle jet), also known as mixture screw to get the maximum benefit from this modification.
My 98 is bone stock other than the mixture screw is turned out 3 full turns. The backfires don't worry me.
I suggest, and others will likely agree, that you find someone else to work on the bike or learn how to do so yourself. The dealer is not going to pay as keen of attention to it as you would. As a side note, the dealer here is not at all interested in Savages, particularly in modifying them. Depending on where you are located, you may have other options, including a dealer with a shop staff that does enjoy tinkering and performance enhancements.
I apologize if I seem a mite on the cold hearted side. You are not the first rider (regardless of brand) that I have heard similar stories from. Welcome to our little family. Anything you wish to find out about the Savage or bikes in general, feel free to ask. We run the scale from novices to ex-outlaws here, and most of us are willing to do whatever it takes to keep each other on the road and happy with our rides.
